ENGINEERING JOB DESCRIPTION / POSTING – 1OCT2014]
Location South St Paul MN.
About BRS Aerospace
BRS Aerospace’s primary business is the design, manufacture, and sale of rocket-extracted whole-airframe parachute recovery systems. These may be for ultralight, experimental, light sport, general aviation, or military aircraft. BRS has been forging the path for this seemingly novel concept for over 30 years.
Ballistic Recovery Systems (aka BRS Aerospace) is currently seeking a multi-disciplinary engineer to support the mission of the Aviation Engineering Department. This team designs the namesake recovery systems and especially focuses on system-to-airframe integration. A new integration scheme often involves the engineering of new reinforcing structure and/or system mounting components. This position will also be involved in the continuing evolution of the product line - to include parachute, rocket, and activation sub-assemblies. Fundamental understandings of aircraft structures, aerodynamics, flight dynamics, rockets, and manufacturing will be required during these design tasks. Frequent interaction with customers and vendors is to be expected, as is providing technical support to Sales, Quality, Procurement, and Production staff.
Q Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar)
Q Must work well in a team, be open and eager to learn, and strive for innovation
Q Ability to create technical documentation - including drawings, test reports, process specifications, and installation manuals
Q CAD/drafting experience, especially SolidWorks and AutoCAD
Q FEM (Finite Element Method) and general structural analysis familiarity
Q Knowledge of manufacturing processes and material science, including textiles, metals, plastics, and composites.
Q Hardware selection (nuts, bolts, washers, etc.)
Q Hands-on fabrication/prototyping abilities (hand-tools, sewing, machining, woodworking, welding, etc.)
Q Basic electrical engineering skills
Q Comfort in industrial environments
Q Ability to oversee new product development - from conceptualization to industrialization
Q Familiarity with engineering documentation control procedures
Q Experience with FAA regulations, ASTM standards, and other technical publications
Q Project management skills:
Q comfortable talking to customers (usually aircraft manufacturers) and vendors
Q management of customer expectations and requirements
Q consideration of budget and inventory restrictions
Q allocation of work to fellow engineers
Q general organizational proficiency
Q Parachuting/skydiving experience
Q A passion for aviation, private pilot license a plus
Q Travel required periodically
